Lately I've been slipping with this thing.
I've been shooting, uploading and working but haven't, for whatever reason, had the energy to sift through things and come up with a reason to update my own blog. A month and some ago I shot an album cover for The Hunting Horns. I shot everything on medium format using expired Tri-X. These are a few of my favorite shots, including the photo that was chosen for the cover itself.
My next few updates will include more work for Kalan and photos I've been shooting for Jen's new clothing store Woodlawn. I haven't done any personal work for a while but I'm happy collecting idea from others and just continuing to work that way.

It's Sunday morning, the first real Sunday of spring time. I remember this day last year, walking to Oddfellows (rip) for brunch and noticing how great everyone looked. It's the day when everyone sheds those layers and regardless of hangover or sleepless night, struts out to eat in denim and boat shoes. So today, everyone get out and eat. You may find your summer fling sitting alone at the bar in Saving Grace or chain smoking outside of Sam James.
Also, I'd like to note that once a week I'll be posting a painting from one of my previous years shows. I'm hoping that those who were interested in some of the pieces while they were up in Sadies and Grateful Head will remember them and that maybe those who couldn't attend will enjoy them for the first time.

The new home of "My Own Models"

As some of you might know, I've been operating two separate blogs for a long while now. My other blog My Own Models, my painting blog, has been hard to keep updated as I haven't been documenting my shows or work as closely. In an attempt to bring my interest in painting back and to gain new perspectives and feedback, I'm going to make this blog one big creative melting pot. My main focus these days has really been photography and I told myself after my last show at Grateful Head that I would take a breather from painting and think about where I really wanted my style to go. I'm feeling ready to share my time with painting again, and I'm also feeling excited about what I'm doing musically and creatively outside of photography specifically. I'm not looking for this blog to become something to house feelings or to become too much of a diary, but more of a broad showcase for some of the things I'm proud of in myself and a way to link you to what I'm proud of in others.
Next in the world of photo I'll have new shots of Claire, Tim and (hopefully) some new friends. Painting wise I'm focusing on photographing and archiving my work in order to sell and show the pieces I have.
Thanks to everyone who have been following both.
I'm excited to share more with you.

Claire and I had a photoshoot last week which tested my skill a little more than I was hoping for. During the set up, my light bulb (my only light bulb) smashed in my hands forcing us to take pictures in the very last moments before the sun went down. These are my colour shots from shooting Luke. After a nearly impossible time trying not to laugh, I just went with it. Lately I've been shooting the colour first as most people need to get their giggles out. I find the dreamy tones add a certain sweetness to the awkward first shots, by the time I switch, my friends are letting me pull them in any direction and I generally get the lengthier more ethereal photos.

Hey everyone. As some of you know, I also paint. I'm getting ready to have a painting show based on some of the photos I took between 2008-2009 of people's hair for the salon. Aaron came over for breakfast the other day and had a little nap on my couch. He was post call and up all night doing the worst job in the hospital, delivering babies. These are all using the day light from my door with one 250 watt day bulb placed in the same direction as the natural. In using this light, I generally have a 14/14 success rate, which is hilarious because I really guess about almost everything on medium format. "It'll be fine" should be my motto. Here are my favorite shots.

I've recently started taking photos of gentlemen sleeping (or almost sleeping) for my own personal project. What I will do with these photos? Who knows. I've always been fascinated by the stretch and length of someone when they are left to take over an entire bed. Generally, morning shots and sleeping pictures are of ethereal looking women looking peaceful and vulnerable. I want to try to capture men in this way.

These are a few of the photos I took of my friend Dan. The hilarious thing about taking these pictures was that it was my first time having to load and unload Ren's Miyama 645 (?). The first set on the couch I know I exposed a bit trying to unload them in a dark bathroom. I used the same lighting and the same settings as the two on the bed but the bed ones are more what I had in mind. I still like the couch ones, but hoped they would be a bit punchier for the close ups. The two super bright ones are on that trusty point and shoot I love so much. I'm still waiting on a few secret black and whites.

This week I shot Ama and Lauren as they made dough with real lard and cooked bacon on Lauren's soon to be trashed vintage stove. I used four cameras, my canon d30, Lauren's Canon AE1, my Yashica, and Danielle's Hassleblad. The 120 film didn't turn out as the light was too faint by the time I shot the roll, but it was a really nice experience just using it (thank you!!!). These are photos from the Yashica and the 35mm Canon. The Digital shots need to be edited along with the 35mm from the Canon, but I still enjoy the results right off the negative.

It's really fun shooting a photographer. I was pleased to shoot Ren, a friend and longtime client of mine because I really got to work with someone encouraging and comfortable. Ren let me shoot on his medium format camera (what kind I don't know) which was a fantastic experience. I also used the regular line up including the ever so exciting Yashica. Again, these are unedited, right off the negative.

This is the second run of photos from Tim and Caitlin's big adventure. I'm happier with a few of these ones and I think it's because we were all more relaxed and I was developing a better understanding for the lighting. This is the second roll from the Om10 and the black and whites are from the Yashica. If I were to show these I'm sure I would still do some minimal photoshop work but I'm trying to avoid needing to.

The other day I had a really great time shooting medium format with Ren. Halfway into the roll we realized we had been double exposing everything! Ha ha ha ha. Luckily I also shot with the Yashica and a few other film cameras so I'm hoping we did something right! This Sunday I'm shooting Lauren and Ama and possibly shooting Anthony and Aleen on Wednesday. After these four I need to take a serious (financial) break and work on my paintings for April and my photoshop skills for the shots I've already done. Thanks for reading!

The new year comes with some new thoughts. Last year was dedicated to capturing my friends in a stark and predictable manor. This year I wanted to see my friends in their homes surrounded by what makes them comfortable. The challenge I found in my first shoot was how to capture what's natural while still having somewhat of a posed 'sears' quality that I find campy and fun. I'm not a great director and that's something I'm going to try to work on. I'm also going to try to work with different cameras every time. I haven't worked with film in a long time and I'm happy to bring it back. For this set I used an Olympus OM10, one studio light and 160 speed color film. Soon I'll have a roll from my Yashika T4 of these same two.

I realized while looking on this tiny blog and looking through my website (Jesseupton.com) that even though I wade wrist deep in the world of colour more than once a day, I've never been one to collect images of results. All of my photos from my website at the moment were inspired by the thought of one drinking one too many and cutting their own hair. Now, I wouldn't let my darling friends do that, so the compromise was that they drank beer and I cut their hair which created a weekly photo session in my living room. That said, when you're shooting everything on the spot, there is no time for colour. So kids, I've got three for you here. I promise to start documenting my work better.
Miss Jenny is one of my roommates. She has been bleaching his hair herself for a long time. I used platinium w/a on her roots with 30 volume. For being self done her hair is surprisingly even. To balance I used po2 + po1 as a pastel mix. With the front section I used p10 + po1 + a dash of 1 for the grey effect.
Next is me. I, as a stylist, have too much colour history to mention. Prior to my almost ginger, I was a 6.1 with three inches of level 7 roots and blond hilights. I colour removed the mid to ends, and applied a richesse 7.41 + 6.
Chris, well, it's been black for ever. No need to explain.
All of the cuts are mine also, including my own.

Well, I made one post on this blog. It was supposed to be some sort of stalker blog about the beautiful people that creep out of the woodwork from the row houses around my salon. Everyday I get to work a bit early. I sit outside on the matte black stairs of our salon and I watch. I watch the meat makers next door with bloody carts walking back and forth from their two buildings, I watch the dogs chase the squirels in the park across the street, but I mainly watch the shoes on the pavement and the hair in the smog. Yeah, I'm a peeper, and god dammit, I'm about to become one step creepier. I'm buying a camera.
